Vedic Maths Subtraction For Kids

Vedic Maths offers several techniques for subtraction that can make the process faster and more intuitive.

1. Nikhilam Sutra (All from 9 and the last from 10)

This technique is useful for subtracting numbers that are close to a power of 10. Here's how it works:

Example: Subtract 87 from 100

  1. Adjust to the nearest base (e.g., 100):
    For 87, the base is 100. 100 - 87 = 13

  2. Subtract the adjustment from the base:
    100 - 13 = 87

    Therefore, 100 - 87 = 13.

Example: Subtract 47 from 1000

  1. Adjust to the nearest base (e.g., 1000):
    For 47, the base is 1000. 1000 - 47 = 953

  2. Perform the subtraction:

    1000 - 953 = 47

2. The Base Method

This method is useful when the numbers being subtracted are close to a base value like 100 or 1000.

Example: Subtract 239 from 500

  1. Adjust to the nearest base (e.g., 500):
    For 239, the base is 500. 500 - 239 = 261

  2. Perform the subtraction:

    500 - 239 = 261

Example: Subtract 188 from 300

  1. Adjust to the nearest base (e.g., 300):
    For 188, the base is 300. 300 - 188 = 112

  2. Perform the subtraction:

    300 - 188 = 112

3. Complementary Subtraction

This method is helpful when the numbers involved are larger. It’s based on finding the complement of the number to subtract.

Example: Subtract 452 from 1000

  1. Find the complement of the number to subtract:
    For 452, the complement with respect to 1000 is 1000 - 452 = 548

  2. Subtract the complement from the base:
Since we subtracted 452, we use the complement to subtract from the base, so the result is 548.

These methods can speed up mental calculations and make subtraction easier, especially with practice. If you have more specific cases or need further details, just let me know!
