Vedic Maths Multiplication For Kids

Vedic Maths provides some efficient techniques for multiplication that can simplify the process, especially with larger numbers.

1. Urdhva Tiryak Sutra (Vertical and Crosswise)

This method is very versatile and can be used for multiplying numbers with more digits.

Example: Multiply 23 by 14

  1. Write the numbers vertically:

    23 × 14
  2. Multiply each digit of the first number by each digit of the second number:

    • Multiply units place digits: 3 × 4 = 12 (write down 2, carry over 1)
    • Multiply tens place digit of the first number by units place digit of the second number and add the cross product: (2 × 4) + (3 × 1) = 8 + 3 = 11 (add carry 1 from previous step: 11 + 1 = 12, write down 2, carry over 1)
    • Multiply tens place digits of both numbers and add the carry: 2 × 1 = 2, plus carry 1 = 3

    Combine the results: 322

2. Ekadhikena Purvena (One More than the Previous)

This method is particularly useful for multiplying numbers close to a base of 10, 100, etc.

Example: Multiply 98 by 97

  1. Determine how far each number is from the base (100):

    • 98 is 2 less than 100 (decrease of 2)
    • 97 is 3 less than 100 (decrease of 3)
  2. Find the base difference:

    • 100 - (2 + 3) = 95 (this is the main part of the result)
  3. Multiply the differences:

    • 2 × 3 = 6 (this is the second part of the result)
  4. Combine both parts:

    • 95 (from the base difference) and 06 (from the product of differences)

    Result: 9506

3. All from 9 and the Last from 10 (Nikhilam Sutra)

This technique can also be used for multiplication.

Example: Multiply 98 by 96

  1. Adjust the numbers to the nearest base (100):

    • For 98: 100 - 98 = 2
    • For 96: 100 - 96 = 4
  2. Subtract the sum of the adjustments from the base (100):

    • 100 - (2 + 4) = 94
  3. Multiply the adjustments:

    • 2 × 4 = 8
  4. Combine the results:

    • 94 (from the base adjustment) and 08 (from the product of adjustments)

    Result: 9408

These methods can make multiplication faster and more efficient, especially with practice.
